Natural Remedies for Teething and the Common Cold

Okay, teething is the worst.

I honestly didn’t even really know until now. Before, it had been kind of a chill experience. He would only get 1 tooth at a time and they came in slowly. Sure he was uncomfortable but we would give him the necessary oils, and, on the bad nights, tylenol. And he would be fine. Then, the tooth would pop through and we would resume our normal lives.

But last week, oh man, last week was killer.

Sawyer got 4 molars at once.

I’m not kidding! It was awful! I think I slept a total of 10 hours over 4 days. And then, of course, he developed a bad cold on top of it and it was sleepless city in our house. Poor baby was in a ton of pain, and I was miserable.

I love my oils and there are so many oils that are great for teething and colds! Here’s what I suggest:

  • Lavender
  • White Fir
  • Breathe
  • Lemon
  • OnGuard
  • Eucalyptus

My cousin suggested I use White Fir along the jawline and it worked amazing. I started making my own roller ball blend with it and it’s our go to for when Sawyer is cutting a tooth. You’ll need: White Fir, Lavender, Fractionated Coconut Oil, and a roller ball.

20 drops White Fir + 10 drops Lavender + fill to the top with FCO

Apply along the jawline and cheekbones to alleviate teething pain.

We also found Breathe helped a lot with his stuffy nose and cough. In the mornings and before bed we would first apply a carrier stick to his chest (sub: coconut oil) and then 2 drops of Breathe. It would help alleviate his congestion and cough.

Eucalyptus is also amazing for congestion. As an adult put a few drops on the floor of your shower, turn it up to the highest heat, close your bathroom doors and breathe in the Eucalyptus steam. It should clear you up right away! For kiddos, a few drops in their warm bath should do just fine. We also added it to Sawyer’s diffuser at night to help him breathe easier.

OnGuard helps in strengthening the immune system. It’s actually really great for preventing sickness, but can definitely be used for the healing process too! We added it to the bottoms of his feet throughout the day and in his diffuser at nap time.

And, as a last resort, we will give him tylenol if nothing else is helping. I like to always go the natural route first, but if he is truly in pain and the oils aren’t helping, I would never deny him pain relief. We do have tylenol on hand, just in case.
