Month 9

What.

Just..what.

How can this be happening? I can’t believe 9 months have already come and gone. Every day he looks less and less like a baby and more and more like a toddler. We’re starting to think about his first birthday and have to start baby-proofing the house!

Last time we checked, Sawyer weighed 15lbs. We haven’t had his 9 month check up yet, so I don’t know specifics, but he seems to really be growing. I would say he’s at least 17 lbs now. We’ll see. The doctor’s were still concerned with his weight gain at his last check up, but I think when we go back in, we won’t have any more problems. I just have this weird feeling like he’s grown so much in the last month. All the formula and solids probably have something to do with it…

He self-weaned.

And I wasn’t ready! Everything I read and prepared myself for said I would probably have to wean him when I was ready. Whenever I thought about it, I thought it would be after his first birthday, and he would be begging to nurse, and I would have to be strong. But nope. He just decided one day he was done. I tried for a few more days to get him to nurse and he refused. He would latch for a second and then get distracted and push me away. Every time. I tried pumping for a few days, but was only getting 1-2 oz at a time, which wasn’t worth it. He was already getting formula for supplementation, so we just upped it to compensate for the lack of breastmilk. And since he’s eating a lot more solids now, he’s been doing just fine. He’s even been eating a lot more of what we eat, and less purees. I was sad at first when he didn’t want to nurse anymore, but I’ve made my peace with it. Plus I hardly know what to do with all my new found free time! 9 months is a great amount of time to be breastfed. If he had wanted to continue, I absolutely would have. But he made up his mind and there wasn’t much I could do about it.

He wears 9-12 month clothes and I can’t believe the next time he goes up a clothing size, he’ll be year old! This is too much! He sits up all on his own, can pull himself up in his crib and pack n play, takes assisted steps, can put himself to sleep, and drinks from a sippy cup. He’s starting to get too big for his mamaroo (cue all the tears), and his infant car seat. We’ll have to upgrade soon! We don’t wear him as much since he’s gotten so much bigger, but I wrap him whenever he’ll let me, but he tends to prefer the baby bjorn or the stroller to the moby wrap (cue more tears).

We just got back yesterday from a short weekend trip to Pagosa Springs for Kurtis’ sister’s wedding. It’s about a 5 hour drive and he did pretty well. On the way up there, we left right before bedtime. He stayed up to eat his dinner and watch 1 episode of Sesame Street. He then slept for about 3 hours and then woke up about an hour before we arrived wide awake. We were unprepared for this and only had 1 episode of Sesame Street loaded onto the ipad. It was only 24 minutes long so we watched it 3 more times. 3. More. Times. And when we arrived at the house it took a while to coax him back to sleep. It was almost 1 am but he was so excited to see his Grandpa and explore the house we were renting for the weekend. He finally went back to sleep around 2am. The drive home was a little more challenging because we left in the morning so he was awake for most of it. It took us longer to get home because we had to stop every few hours to change and feed him. He took 2 separate 1 hour naps and when he was awake I sat in the back with him feeding him puffs, playing with toys, and watching Sesame Street or Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. We were more prepared this time and loaded more episodes onto the ipad. We also got a cool ipad mount, that mounted it to the headrests in the car so he could watch. It was a crazy weekend but we survived! Next week, he’ll take his first plane ride!

Let the countdown to toddlerhood begin!
